Black Dog of Fate: An American Son Uncovers His Armenian Past

In this tenth anniversary edition of his award-winning memoir, New York Times bestselling author Peter Balakian has expanded his compelling story about growing up in the baby-boom suburbs of the '50s and '60s and coming to understand what happened to his family in the first genocide of the twentieth century–the Ottoman Turkish government's extermination of more than one million Armenians in 1915.

Gallipoli: The Ottoman Campaign

Edward Erickson, in this perceptive new study, concentrates on the Ottoman side of the campaign. He looks in detail at the Ottoman Army - at its structure, tactics and deployment – and at the conduct of the commanders who served it so well. His pioneering work complements the extensive literature on other aspects of the Gallipoli battle, in particular those accounts that have focused on the experience of the British, Australians and New Zealanders. This highly original reassessment of the campaign will be essential reading for students of the Great War, especially the conflict in the Middle East.

Nicopolis 1396 - The Last CrusadeNicopolis 1396 - The Last Crusade

By the second half of the 14th century, the once mighty Byzantine Empire had been reduced to little more than the city of Constantinople. In 1391, the Ottoman ruler Sultan Bayazid I 'The Lightning' besieged the city. Pope Boniface IX preached a crusade and a French-led army of 10,000 marched east. At Nicopolis they met the Ottoman army in battle. Ignoring the advice of their Hungarian and Transylvanian allies, the Crusaders charged the Turks and were in turn smashed by the Ottoman heavy cavalry. The last Crusade ended on the banks of the Danube as the Crusaders desperately sought to escape from the pursuing Turks.

Crusading in the Fifteenth Century - Message and ImpactCrusading in the Fifteenth Century - Message and Impact

This collection of essays by European and American scholars addresses the changing nature and appeal of crusading during the period which extended from the battle of Nicopolis in 1396 to the battle of Mohacs in 1526. Contributors focus on two key aspects of the subject. One is developments in the crusading message and the language in which it was framed. These were brought about partly by the appearance of new enemies, above all the Ottoman Turks, and partly by shifting religious values and innovative currents of thought within Catholic Europe.

This book could easily have been called 'Armies and Enemies of the Ottoman Empire', since of all the nations or political entities it covers only the peoples of India never came into conflict with the Ottoman Turks during this period. The Balkans receive particular attention, where in the mid-15th century charismatic historical figures such as Scanderbeg, Dracula, and Janos Hunyadi led wonderfully colorful armies against the Turks.
