The Great Courses – Effective Communication Skills Talk is something you do every day. And your life is literally shaped by it. Many of the decisions you make are decided by talking. As the name clearly indicates, this section of the Advanced exam is designed to test your lexical (vocabulary) skills. In this task there is a text with ten gaps (plus one example), then at the end of each line with a gap you will see a word in capital letters, eg USE. You must form a new word based on the word in capitals to fill the gap. So. from USE, you might form useful, usefully, usefulness, useless, user, usage, etc.

It might be expected that this would refer to varieties of English which arc used internationally, but this is not its normal field of use. Instead, it is a well-established label for varieties of English which are used nationally in different places in the world. Although ‘national varieties of English’ might be a more transparent term, this widely accepted though slightly peculiar use of‘international varieties’ is maintained in this book...
