The Kaw (or Kanza) are an American Indian people of the central Midwestern United States. The tribe known as "Kaw" have also been known as the "Wind People, " "People of water, " Kansa, Kaza, Kosa, and Kasa. Their tribal language is Kansa, classified as a Siouan language. The toponym "Kansas" was derived from the name of this tribe. The Kaw are closely related to the Osage Nation, with whom members often intermarried.

Traditions of the OsageTraditions of the Osage

The tales here presented were collected by the author while engaged in making an ethnological collection among the Osage for the Field Columbian Museum, in 1901-1903.
The Osage are of Siouan stock, and made their home, when first known to the whites, in southern Missouri, northern Arkansas and eastern Kansas. In 1871 they were removed to a reservation in the northeastern corner of Oklahoma, which they still occupy.
