Welcome to the Desert of the RealWelcome to the Desert of the Real

To people who come to this book looking for an analysis of the attacks on the World Trade Center this book will appear to be peculiar and eccentric, and therefore in questionable taste. Slavoj Zisek is a Marxist philosopher from the formerly Yugoslav republic of Slovenia. (At the same time he is quite caustic against those who think that Milosevic's horrors could have been avoided by an appeal to the cosmopolitan virtues of Titoism. Not within the party framework, at any rate.) He has a special interest in the French psychoanalyst Lacan, which does not stop him from discussing other imposing figures such as Hegel, Adorno, Foucault and, suprisingly in this book, G.K. Chesterton.

On Hegel: The Sway of the Negative (Renewing Philosophy)On Hegel: The Sway of the Negative (Renewing Philosophy)

Hegel is most famous for his view that conflicts between contrary positions are necessarily resolved. Whereas this optimism, inherent in modernity as such, has been challenged from Kierkegaard onward, many critics have misconstrued Hegel's own intentions. Focusing on the Science of Logic, this transformative reading of Hegel on the one hand exposes the immense force of Hegel's conception of tragedy, logic, nature, history, time, language, spirit, politics, and philosophy itself.

Between Kant & Hegel - Texts in the Development of Post-Kantian Idealism

This volume fills a lamentable gap in the philosophical literature by providing a collection of writings from the pivotal generation of thinkers between Kant and Hegel. It includes some of Hegel's earliest critical writings -- which reveals much about his thinking before the first mature exposition of his position in 1807 -- as well as Schelling's justification of the new philosophy of nature against sceptical and religious attack. This edition contains George di Giovanni's extensive corrections, new preface, and updated bibliography.
