Grady Tucker and his sixteen year-old sister Emily have both moved to a new house with their scientist parents who are attempting to determine whether deer can survive in the wild of Florida. Grady and Emily go exploring and get lost in a swamp where they find a crazed white-haired man who chases them all the way home. A subsequent series of strange events lead the two children to believe that there is a werewolf in their midst and they start making accusations about who the werewolf might be.
In the days leading up to Halloween, eleven-year-old Carly Beth Caldwell is terrorized by the other students at her school with multiple scary pranks that succeed in causing her to run away crying and vowing revenge. On Halloween day, she goes to a shop and finds a mask that the shop owner does not want to sell her but Carly manages to run away with anyway. When she tries on the mask, she has difficulty removing it and her voice unintentionally changes to a hoarse growl.
Hannah Fairchild is having a boring summer at home after all her friends leave town for the break. However, the day after having a horrifying dream about her room being on fire, she meets her new next door neighbor, Danny. While Hannah comes to believe that Danny is a ghost, he demonstrates to her that it is in fact she who is a ghost, having been killed in a fire five years prior.
Billy is sent off on a bus to Camp Nightmoon by his mom and dad. The bus driver stops partway to the camp and leaves all the children in the middle of the desert. A group of creatures appear and prepare to slaughter the children, but are scared off by the appearance of a man with a gun who claims to be the leader of Camp Nightmoon.
Lucy Dark likes tormenting her younger brother, but ends up getting in trouble. She then decide to go to the library and borrows a book. The next day, when she returns her book, the librarian is acting strange. She decides to go to the library later in the day, and finds out the librarian is--a MONSTER!
