English National Identity and Football Fan Culture: Who Are Ya?

In recent years, scholars have understood the increasing use of the St George's Cross by football fans to be evidence of a rise in a specifically 'English' identity which has emerged as part of a wider 'national' response to broader political processes such as devolution and European integration which have fragmented identities within the UK. Using the controversial figurational sociological approach advocated by the twentieth-century theorist Norbert Elias, this book challenges such a view, drawing on ethnographic research amongst fans to explore the precise nature of the relationship between contemporary English national identity and football fan culture.

I love footballA Match Made
Hunter Davies loves football. And this book blows the whistle on his fifty-year love affair with the beautiful game. I Love Football provides an honest and funny look at why so many of us lose our hearts to footy. Hunter explains the sport’s history, the high and lows of supporting a team, how it felt being at 1966 World Cup, and what it’s like meeting legends like George Best and Gazza.

Teammates
Tiki and Ronde are brothers, best friends, and teammates on the Cave Spring Vikings football team. It's the last preseason game against their arch-rival Knights -- and the football is suddenly knocked out of Tiki's grip. What gives, he thinks, I've always carried the ball this way before. Inspired by Coach Mike, who tells Tiki, "You've gotta believe," Tiki begins secret practice sessions with Ronde in the morning on the way to school. Will it make a difference in the next big game against the Knights? Based on the childhoods of NFL superstars Tiki and Ronde Barber, this story of determination and of confidence will inspire all who read it.
