Edgar Rice Burroughs - Tarzan 06 - Jungle Tales of TarzanEdgar Rice Burroughs - Tarzan 06 - Jungle Tales of Tarzan
In this collection of 12 short stories, Burroughs returns to Tarzan's early years providing new depth and detail to the Lord of the Jungle, during his time among the great apes. Having learned to read from his father's books, Tarzan seeks to apply his knowledge to the world around him and to learn more about life, death, dreams, God, love, and friendship. Tarzan challenges his best friend Taug, in a fight to the death, but then risks his life to save him; he has nightmares after eating rancid elephant meat only to awake and be faced with a live, man-eating gorilla; twice he sports a lion's skin to play a practical joke, but he doesn't always have the last laugh!

A spy, Albert Werper, has been sent by Tarzan's long time foe, Achmet Zek, to abduct Jane. His plan changes when he discovers that Tarzan is bankrupt and must return to the lost city of Opar to bring back more gold. While Tarzan and the spy are in the treasure tomb, an earthquake strikes Tarzan down and blocks the exit. The only way out leads Werper to the sacrificial chamber of the Flaming God, where he soon finds himself the next victim. Tarzan is quick to recover his strength - but not his memory!
Tarzan is the original super hero - one most of us would like to be. It is easy to surrender ourselves to the thrill of his exploits in the damp African Jungle, yield to the pull of primitive impulse, and imagine we are back again in pre-historic times, swinging from tree to tree in glorious abandon through the primeval forest or fighting the great cave bear with rude stone weapons.

In his quest to survive, the young civilized boy reckons with life and death as he encounters the same dangers that his father once faced and ultimately matures into the mighty warrior, "Korak the Killer".
