Beliefs - A Hidden Variable in Mathematics Education?Beliefs - A Hidden Variable in Mathematics Education?

The twenty chapters in this book all focus on aspects of mathematical beliefs, from a variety of different perspectives. Current knowledge of the field is synthesized and existing boundaries are extended. The book is divided into three, partly overlapping, sections. The first concentrates on conceptualizations and measurement of beliefs, the second on research about teachers' beliefs, and the third on facets of students' beliefs about mathematics. A diversity of instruments is used for data collection, including surveys, interviews, observations, and essay writing, as well as more innovative approaches.

Cultural Diversity in the British Middle AgesCultural Diversity in the British Middle Ages

Through close readings of both familiar and obscure medieval texts, the contributors to this volume attempt to read England as a singularly powerful entity within a vast geopolitical network. This capacious world can be glimpsed in the cultural flows connecting the Normans of Sicily with the rulers of England, or Chaucer with legends arriving from Bohemia. It can also be seen in surprising places in literature, as when green children are discovered in twelfth-century Yorkshire or when Welsh animals begin to speak of the long history of their land’s colonization.

Heart of the Community: The Libraries We LoveHeart of the Community: The Libraries We Love

We wanted to celebrate libraries and their contribution to American and Canadian life. Public libraries are a foundation of democracy, helping create informed citizens. This book attempts to display the full range of the diversity, potential, style, history, and contributions of libraries in the United States and Canada. We looked for regional diversity from east to west and north to south, and temporal coverage, from the earliest libraries to the very newest. We also wanted to include libraries that have successfully undergone change, whether it is relocation, renovation, expansion, new missions, or new clientele.
