Widely regarded as the first English novel, Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe is one of the most popular and influential adventure stories of all time. I walked to the highest part of the island and looked around. The island was quite large, but there were no people on it. I looked out to sea, and there were no boats. "Why," I thought, "did this happen to me? But I´m still alive. There must be some reason for that."
When the captain tells Robinson, "Young man, you should never go to sea again… God has shown you that the sea is not for you." Robinson ignores his advice and goes to sea again, this time with terrible consequences. He is forced into slavery and escapes, but he is then shipwrecked on a desert island where he manages to survive through resourcefulness and luck.
