The lighter themes of the book involve platonic love, loyalty, hope, courage and pacifism.

The story begins with what is called the Benjy section (one of the brothers), which is some of the best stream-of-consciousness writing ever committed to paper. It makes for a confusing read, but diligence and patience shows the method and beauty behind the seeming madness.
