This review is designed to familiarize you with the mathematical skills and concepts likely to be tested on the Graduate Record Examinations General Test. The text includes many examples with solutions, and there is a set of exercises at the end of each section. The following material, which is divided into the four basic content areas of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis, is not
intended to be comprehensive. It is assumed that certain basic concepts are common knowledge to all examinees. Emphasis is, therefore, placed on the more important skills, concepts, and defmitions, and on those particular areas that are frequently confused or misunderstood. If any of the topics seem especially unfamiliar, we encourage you to consult appropriate mathematics texts for a
more detailed treatment of those topics.

Rodriguez looks at the Matachines dance as it is performed in two areas along the U.S./Mexico border. She discusses at great length the different structures, presentations, and meanings of this ritual procession dance to the people of these two areas, as well as examinig the Matachines' cultural background. Other books on Matachines contain similar information, but most stop short of the depth and precision of Rodriguez's work. Matachines is an old and extremely complex art form, and Rodriquez successfully tackles the task of discussing days' worth of variations in costume, execution, characterization, and finally the attitudes and beliefs of individuals in both communities towards their cultural dance. The many photographs work well to demonstrate and enhance Rodriguez's findings.

  Language presentation and practice explore commonly confused structures and tenses. The contrasting of problem areas allows students to reflect on their understanding of English and to see it fall into place.

 

This old book is a great introduction to all of the fields that make up cognitive science at a relatively low price, although it could use an updated edition. It takes a computational perspective as it surveys the various areas, and that is good for someone coming from a scientific field. It covers psychology, philosophy, linguistics, and artificial intelligence, relating them all to the field of cognitive science. In spite of the complexity of each of these individual areas, there really are no hard prerequisites for reading it. However, I would recommend you have at least an upper-level undergraduate knowledge of two of the fields covered in order to better see the total interconnection of all the fields. The book probably goes into the most depth in the areas of natural language processing and vision because these are the most computationally complex. This book is not the last word on any of the fields it covers, but it will get you started.
