Tales of the Bark Lodges

Twelve traditional animal tales that preserve elements of Wyandot culture.

There had been many intermarriages with white people in Ohio, and such marriages increased after the tribe came west. Among the prominent mixed- blood members were families by the names of Armstrong, Clark, Northrup, and Walker. In 1854, William Walker, one of the leaders of the tribe, was chosen as the provisional governor of the Territory of Nebraska. The Walker family is still well known among the Wyandot in Oklahoma. Governor Walker was the great-uncle of the late B. N. 0. Walker who served as chief clerk in the Quapaw Agency at Miami for many years, a talented musician, singer, and poet. Under the pen name “Hen-toh,” he wrote Tales of the Bark Lodges, one of the classics of early Oklahoma literature.
