And he has eminently succeeded in imparting to his study the simplicity of outline which reveals the author's thorough knowledge of the period and understanding of his problem. One seldom meets a book to which this praise can be given; the author should be congratulated on his ability to compress information without sacrificing either perspicuity or vividness.
