Supplement XVII focuses intensely on contemporary writers, many of whom have received little sustained attention from critics. Fiction writers Max Apple, Charles Baxter, Joanna Scott, Scott Turow, William T. Vollmann, David Markson, Melvin Bukiet, and Anna Quindlen have written substantial novels.
