The book begins with Boston medical examiner Maura Isles assisting with the study of a mummy known as Madame X, a recent discovery of a local museum. When the relic is subjected to CT scanning, the mummy proves not to be so ancient after all. The woman died only recently, an apparent victim of homicide, yet the preservation techniques are historically accurate. That crackling beginning sets Isles and homicide detective Jane Rizzoli down a path that leads them to a serial killer with knowledge of archeology and a bizarre attachment to his victims. With a gripping plot and just the right amount of fascinating scientific details, The Keepsake is one of the author's best achievements.
