Simon Baker stars as Patrick Jane, an independent consultant with a fictionalized version of the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He has a remarkable track record for solving serious crimes by using his amazing skills of observation. He also makes frequent use of his mentalist abilities and his semi-celebrity past as a psychic medium using paranormal abilities he now admits he feigned. He abandoned his pretense out of remorse when his attention-seeking behavior attracted the attention of a serial killer who killed his family.

The pilot episode had an audience of 15.6 million viewers in its first airing, and 7.8 million in a re-airing three days later.[3] It also introduced some of Jane's backstory, indicating that his wife and daughter had been murdered five years before the series began by a serial killer known as "Red John."

On October 15, 2008, CBS ordered a full season of The Mentalist. [4] The December 2, 2008 episode ("Flame Red") was the highest-rated television show of the week, marking the first time a program in its first season had achieved that distinction since Desperate Housewives four years earlier.[5]

On January 7, 2009, the show won the award for "Favorite New TV Drama" at the 35th People's Choice Awards.

Episode 4: Ladies in Red
A wealthy banker is found dead inside a secret vault in his house, and the team delves into his secret life to find out who killed him.[/hide]

Episode 5: Redwood
A girl is found stabbed to death in the woods, and her best friend is missing. She is found covered in blood with a knife in her hand, which makes her the prime suspect, but she is suffering from memory loss. Patrick Jane uses his mentalist skills to help find out what really happened.




Episede 6: Red Handed
A severed hand is found on the California-Nevada state line, that belongs to a murdered hotel casino owner. While the CBI team suspects a mafia hit, Patrick Jane uses the investigation as an opportunity to win at the cards tables.




Episode 7: Seing Red
Patrick stages a seance to prove that a supposed psychic, who predicted that a murder victim was in danger, is a fake and a killer.




Episode 8: The Thin Red Line
Patrick disagrees with authorities when they suspect a drug dealer on trial is behind the murders of the witness and the witness's girlfriend.




Episode 9: Flame Red
Patrick suspects a member of a National Guard unit of murdering three veterans and goes undercover to investigate.




Episode 10: Red Brick and Ivy
Patrick takes a personal interest in the case of a poisoned professor when he discovers the prime suspect is his former psychiatrist.
