Russia and the Former Soviet Republics (Modern World Cultures)

48

From Chapter 1:
This book examines a country and culture at the core of a great political realm. It was a realm of Eastern Slavic tribes 1,000 years ago, of the Russian Empire for 500 years, and of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (the Soviet Union, or USSR) for most of the twentieth century. It involved the Vikings’ conquest over a Slavic people and the emergence of the first Russians. It rose to world fame on the vision of single-minded tyrants, on the strength of artists, explorers, and engineers, and on the hard labor of oppressed workers and colonized foreigners. Toward the end of the twentieth century, it lost its grip on an immense empire of captive nations in a cascade of defections and retreats that left the world amazed.
