David Timson’s talent for characterization and narration provides the splendid pacing for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Crooked Man,” in which Sherlock Holmes must solve the mystery of Colonel Barclay’s death; the old solider found stone dead from a violent blow, face distorted by fear. Unusual animal paw prints, and an encounter with a dreadful looking creature speaking in a strange tongue, convince Holmes he must approach the case from another aspect. Excellent! Watson cries. Elementary, Holmes replies.
